The Equivalent
Mike Weaver, PhD (Cantab), Hon.FRPS, pre-eminent photographic historian, has been a Fellow of Linacre College, University of Oxford, for decades. He has been my friend for a number of years, as has his American-born wife, Dr. Anne Hammond, author of Ansel Adams: Divine Performance, originally her D.Phil (Oxon) dissertation. They were joint Editors of the journal History of Photography. Mike is one of the most brilliant lecturers I’ve known, as well as one of the best raconteurs, at his dining table and mine. Among my fondest memories is of Mike lecturing on Alfred Stieglitz’s portfolio “Equivalents,” some 220 pictures of sky and clouds, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is about to turn 80 (March 28th, 2017) and for that occasion I’ve created an image titled “Head In The Clouds, Or, The Equivalent.”
